Review: Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm

By nature, I’m borderline lazy, so when a beauty product comes to my attention that seems to perform several functions, I’m all in; why use five products when one will do? Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm is one of these beauty products.

  • Cleanses

  • Removes makeup

  • Exfoliates

  • Moisturises

  • Nourishes

  • Repairs

  • Protects

That’s a big list for a small pot of potion that is so reasonably priced (at time of publishing this is £14.99 for 60 ml). However, as with many things in life, size doesn’t matter; it’s what you do with it that counts. Other than lazy, I tend to be over zealous, a bit too enthusiastic about things, and this is what tainted my initial thoughts about Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm. I hadn’t fully appreciated the power of the balm. I’d over-applied it and had a breakout – which isn’t usual for my skin. However, once I’d calmed down and used it as recommended, the benefits were plentiful.

Lyonsleaf is run by Vicky and Ben Lyons from their farm in the Mendip Hills, Somerset and started life as food and herb business before evolving into a natural skincare company. The Lyonsleaf range offers quality, effective skincare products that are 100% natural.

What’s Inside?

The Lyons’ passion, knowledge and research of herbs has been used to create the balm which is apparent by the gentle fragrance of sage, patchouli and palmarosa. This blend of essential oils is the perfect antidote for stressed skin: helps with skin regeneration and healing, antioxidant rich to combat free radicals that cause wrinkles and fine lines; it’s anti-inflammatory, rehydrating, and balances sebum and oil production and helps to remedy combination skin and acne breakouts.

Can you see how mighty this balm is? I’ve written a paragraph about the benefits that you get from the fragrant essential oils alone. If this blend of essential oils were used with a benign carrier, the balm would still perform as a great natural skin product for all skin types. However, they are not, and the Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm* consists of other active ingredients that do nothing but boost your skin’s health.

Babassu Oil:

Babassu oil is the lesser known cousin of coconut oil. While it shares many of the features of coconut oil; it is solid at room temperature and melts when in contact with your skin and contains the same fatty acids and vitamins; babassu oil could be considered a superior alternative:

  • Lightweight – doesn’t feel oily or greasy

  • Doesn’t clog pores – ideal for people with oily skin or those prone to acne outbreaks

  • Absorbs quickly so it’s less messy

  • Barely-there fragrance – doesn’t affect the aroma of essential oils

  • Antibacterial and rich in vitamin E which is essential for skin rejuvenation

The babassu oil is cold pressed from harvested Babassu nuts that have naturally fallen in the rainforest. There are no chemicals used in the growth of processing of the oil.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is extracted from the nut of the African shea tree and has been used as a beauty product since Cleopatra’s rein. It’s rich in nutrients that are highly effective for skin care, which is why it is one of the most commonly used ingredients in natural skin care products.

  • Fatty acids are the foundation of healthy cell membranes

  • Phenolics are antioxidants that minimise signs of ageing by repairing damaged skin

  • Vitamin E which helps to help reduce scars, moisturise and soften the skin

  • Vitamin A which boosts the production of healthy skin cells

Have you noticed how some balms that contain shea butter can feel a little grainy and crystallised? This is because the product has melted and cooled too fast which causes the fatty acids to reform quicker than the shea. The Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm has not fallen foul of this problem – the texture remains smooth and gives an even application.

Almond, Jojoba and Macadamia Oils

I’ve grouped these oils together (it’s my laziness coming out again) principally because they share many features, and I would just be repeating myself! The only thing you want recycling is your household waste, not paragraphs of a Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm review. These oils are naturally rich in fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamin A and vitamin E, but there are other qualities that they possess that make them so effective:

  • Macadamia and jojoba oil are considered the closest match to the naturally occurring sebum of the skin. Why is this so great? When you apply the beauty balm, your body thinks that it has adequate sebum for hydration, so no more will be secreted – your skin won’t look oily, but it will remain hydrated without more acne inducing sebum being produced. These help to control sebum production.

  • Almond, Jojoba and Macadamia are noncomedogenic which means that your pores won’t get clogged -less break outs and reduced acne.

  • Macadamia and jojoba oil are hypoallergenic. Although we talk about macadamia nuts, they are seeds, but if you have a nut allergy, you should pay attention to the almond oil.

  • These oils are great for ageing skin. As we age, are ability to naturally create sebum deteriorates, and so these oils are fantastic for mature skins as they are light but highly penetrative. Studies have also shown that antioxidants applied to the skin have improved collagen synthesis – vital for keeping looking young! Almond oil is also famed for its ability to lessen dark circles and eyebags – after a couple of weeks of daily use, you should be able to see an improvement.

The oils in Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm are cold-pressed. This means that the antioxidants and nutrients that are so important are not reduced by the process of extracting the oil.

How do you use it?

  • As a moisturiser

Just take a small amount and warm it between your fingers and massage it into your clean skin until it has been absorbed. There’s no rocket science to it, other than portion control! The reason the balm comes in a small container is that you really don’t need to use lashes of it. If you are treating a particularly dry area of skin, just use more!

  • As a cleanser

Apply the balm to your dry face and massage to dissolve any makeup and dirt. Use as hot as you can handle it facecloth or muslin cloth and hold it on your face. The steam lifts the dirt and makeup and any remaining can be gently wiped away.

There is no need to use a moisturiser after you have cleansed using Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm, the natural ingredients leave your skin moisturised.

Is it worth the money?

Every ingredient is natural and combine to create a powerful balm that does what it says on the tin, and more. There are few products that you can call a no-brainer, and I hate that phrase and using it has made me twitch; however, Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm ticks so many boxes that you can’t fail to be impressed by it. If you read the reviews on their website, you will see the number of customers who have found relief from painful skin conditions such as perioral dermatitis, eczema, and acne – so you have one product that replaces several and even eases the most severe of skin conditions.

This product is worthy of 5 stars, it’s a small package that gives big benefits to your skin and managed to excel in the long list of features from the start of the review. Where some cleansers make you feel like your skin has been stripped of its natural goodness, this balm makes it feel nourished and treated.

Is it suitable for a gift?

Yes! The branding of the balm represents all the goodness of the product and the company. Even the logo is packed with vitality. The lion’s mane is made of a hedgerow scene with flowers and plants and even gardening equipment. It’s one of those products that anyone would be pleased to receive – no matter what their skin type.
